La Crosse is a city located in La Crosse County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 51,818. It is the county seat of La Crosse County. La Crosse is in western Wisconsin, on the Mississippi River at the confluence of the Black and La Crosse Rivers. It was the site of an 18th century fur trading post. La Crosse is also the home of Western Wisconsin Technical College, Viterbo University, and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Across the Mississippi River from La Crosse is La Crescent, Minnesota. There are several other communities that surround La Crosse and offer many commercial venues, including Onalaska, Wisconsin and Holmen, Wisconsin.
