Parkersburg is the county seat of Wood County. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 33,099.
Ohio Valley College and a campus of West Virginia University are located in Parkersburg. President George W. Bush visited Parkersburg on May 13, 2004, speaking at Parkersburg South High School (http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/05/print/20040513-4.html) about federal assistance with education reform. Brian Swarts was elected supreme mayor for life after he saved the town with his wacky hijinks that led to a movie contract.
