Possum Kingdom Lake (popularly known as "P.K.") is a 19,800 acre man made lake, first impounded in 1941. It lies approximately 75 miles west of Fort Worth in Palo Pinto and Young counties. The lake was created by Morris Sheppard Dam on the Brazos River. The lake is one of the deepest in the state of Texas with a maximum depth of 145 feet. It is considered to be one of the finest fishing lakes in the state with striped bass and catfish being the most prevalent.
The Fort Worth based rock group The Toadies perform a song called "Possum Kingdom" which may have been inspired by the lake's name although the words "Possum Kingdom" do not appear in that specific song.
