New London is a city located in Rusk County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 987.
On March 18, 1937 a natural gas explosion at the New London Junior Senior High School killed 298 people (most were children). This event led to the legal requirement in the United States that natural gas, which is normally odorless, be given an identifying smell.
