Indiana is a borough located in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 14,895. It is the county seat of Indiana County.
For many years the major industry in Indiana was coal mining, but the mines closed early in the 20th century, and the area still has economic difficulties. The borough currently promotes itself as the "Christmas Tree Capital of the World" due to the large number of Christmas tree farms in the surrounding area. Also based in Indiana is a public university, the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
Indiana is the hometown of actor Jimmy Stewart, who lived at 104 North Seventh Street. A small museum exhibits his life in the same building as the local public library.
