Melville is a hamlet and census-designated place in the town of Huntington in Suffolk County on Long Island, New York, roughly half way between Manhattan and The Hamptons. The hamlet is home to the US headquarters of many national and international corporations, including Gentiva Health Services, Nikon and Olympus. As of the 2000 census, the census-designated place (CDP) of Melville had a total population of 14,533.
The hamlet's former name, Sweet Hollow, was replaced by Melville in school records in 1854. The name Melville was selected in honor of Herman Melville.
