Hornell is a city located in Steuben County, New York, about 56 miles south of Rochester, New York. The city is named after the Hornell family, early settlers. Hornell is nicknamed Maple City after the large maple trees on Main and Broadway streets. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,019.
The City of Hornell was incorporated in 1888 as the City of Hornellsville (Having become the Village of Hornellsville in 1852). The name was changed to Hornell in 1906. The city is located within the Town of Hornellsville.
