Tekamah is a city located in Burt County, Nebraska. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,892. It is the county seat of Burt County.
A claim was staked to establish Tekamah as a town in October 1854. On March 14, 1855, Tekamah became an incorporated city by an act of the first territorial legislature of Nebraska.
Contention has surrounded the origin of the name of Tekamah. Various colorful stories surrounding the origin of the name have developed. Local historians now consider the town of Tekamah to have been named for Tehama County, California, where one of the founders of Tekamah had previously visited. Various spellings of the name of the Nebraska town can be found on early maps. The name Tekamah is unique to Burt County, Nebraska, as it is spelled today.
