Alliance is a city located in Box Butte County, Nebraska. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,959. It is the county seat of Box Butte County.
The town was originally named Grand Lake. When the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroadame to Grand Lake in 1888, the railroad superintendent, G.W. Holdrege, wanted to change it to a simple one-word name closer to the beginning of the alphabet. He thought a one-word name close the beginning of the alphabet would be better for business. The U.S. Post Office gave Holdrege permission, and he picked "Alliance."
Alliance is the home to the Stonehenge replica Carhenge, which is located north of the town.
