Merrimac is a town located in the county of Essex in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts along the Merrimack River (sometimes called the Merrimac River). Essex County, like many counties in Massachusetts, has no major administrative functions over the town, which, like most towns in Massachusetts, practices a limited form of home rule. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,138.
Merrimac is also located on the border of the U.S. state of New Hampshire.
