Medford is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 55,765. It is the home of Tufts University. The name is said to mean "ford in a meadow." People in surrounding cities often pronounce the name as if it were spelled Meffa, while Medford residents commonly pronounce it Medfid.
