Fort Washington is a census-designated place located in Prince George's County, Maryland. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 23,845.
It is the site of Fort Washington, for many decades the only defensive fort protecting Washington D.C.. The fort is a stone structure with a good cannon shot down the Potomac River. During the War of 1812, the Fort was quickly abandoned during a British advance. Off shore from the fort are the wrecked remains of the USS Princeton, a warship that accidently exploded subsequent the the American Civil War.
