Long Island is a town located in Cumberland County, Maine that was that seceded from the City of Portland in 1993. Much of the impetus for the secession was fueled by out-of-control tax increases that threatened the ability of lobstermen and fishermen to pursue their trade. It was becoming increasingly apparent that if taxes were not reigned in that only the rich would be able to afford access to the ocean. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 202,. There are 100 residents over the age of 18. There are 175 registered voters on Long Island.
