Versailles is a city located in Woodford County, Kentucky. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,511. It is the county seat of Woodford County. The city's name is pronounced differently than the French city of the same name: IPA /v?'se?lz/ listen.
The history of Versailles goes back to its founding in the 18th century. The town was named for Versailles, France. It was briefly occupied during the Civil War by Confederate and Union forces.
