Amana is a location in Iowa County, Iowa. The name means "remain faithful." Amana is comprised of a number of colonies in Iowa County.
The settlement of this community stems from the members of a German religious group (The Community of True Inspiration) seeking freedom to practice their communal lifestyle. This group had originally settled in West Seneca, New York, where they were known as the Ebenezers.
The Amana area stretches from about 20 miles southwest of Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Williamsburg, Iowa. Today the area is a popular tourist destination, and for products that are manufactured in the Amana area. These include wine, foodstuffs, clothing, and furniture.
Also in Amana is the birthplace of Amana brand of kitchen appliances. A manufacturing plant is located in West Amana. The company headquarters was also located in Amana until the brand was sold, later becoming part of the Maytag Corporation.
