Elk Grove is a census-designated place and a city of 108,000 people in Sacramento County, California, located south of the state capital of Sacramento. As of the 2000 Census, the CDP had a total population of 59,984, but is one of the faster growing towns in California owing to proximity to Sacramento and expanses of undeveloped land (former agricultural lands).
Elk Grove is a California central valley town that first developed around agriculture, but has since become a residential suburb of Sacramento. "Old" Elk Grove is located about 1 mile east of State Route 99 (formerly U.S. Highway 99, the north-south artery of California central valley). Most newer housing developments in Elk Grove lie west of Hwy. 99, towards Interstate 5, now the major north-south artery for the U.S. West Coast, in an area locally called "Laguna" or "Laguna Creek".
