Burney is a census-designated place located in Shasta County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 3,217.
Burney is a center for fly fishing, with native brown and rainbow trout in many nearby rivers and streams, including Hat Creek, the Pit River, and Burney Creek. Other attractions in the area include McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park, home to the Burney Falls.
Burney was named after Samuel Burney, a settler in the area in the 1850s. Burney was found dead in 1859 the valley, which came to be called "the valley where Burney died," and finally just "Burney".
