Auburn is a city located in Lee County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 42,987. It is the fastest-growing area in the state of Alabama. In recent years, the city has grown together with nearby Opelika, Alabama to form the Auburn-Opelika Area. Although the two towns still maintain separate governments and identities, the line between the two is becoming increasingly blurred.
The city's unofficial nickname is "The Loveliest Village On The Plains", taken from a line in the poem The Deserted Village by Oliver Goldsmith: "Sweet Auburn! loveliest village of the plain . . ."
It is the site of Auburn University, the largest university in the state of Alabama with an enrollment of about 24,000. Auburn is also the location of the Ludwig von Mises Institute.
